The National Research Council Canada in St John s Newfoundland and the DP in Ice group in Europe, using the Hamburg ship model basin, are researching the effects of ice stresses on vessel positioning. This involves numerical and physical modelling, and eventually full scale testing. DP in high currents is equally as formidable a challenge as DP in ice. Mojo Maritime has designed a vessel that can operate in DP mode in currents of up to 10 knots, mainly for the offshore renewables industry. The HF4 concept vessel would be capable of automatic station keeping in these currents, even after worst case failure such as loss of one of four thrusters.
